Friendship Games – Hope Lives On
The Friendship Network, a coalition of mental health organizations, community, volunteers, supporters, and friends in the Miami-Dade and Broward counties, held the Friendship Games – Hope Lives On! on Friday, April 26, at TY Park in Hollywood.
This annual event provides a powerful platform for promoting awareness, social acceptance, and support for individuals living with mental illness and/or co-occurring conditions.
Derek Moore, Thriving Mind’s Peer Services Manager, served as emcee of the event. Esther Serrano, Thriving Mind’s Peer Specialist, and Walter Thompson, Thriving Mind’s Peer Specialist with the Jail In-Reach Program, also attended the event. All three were awarded the Hero of Hope Peer Award.
Sandra McQueen-Baker, CEO of Fresh Start of Miami-Dade, was awarded the Peer Support Pioneer Award, recognizing excellence in peer support leadership. Ms. McQueen-Baker is a longtime member of the Thriving Mind board, having served as both a voting and honorary member.
The tradition of the Friendship Games dates to 1986 and has continuously advocated for the rights and well-being of those facing mental health and/or co-occurring conditions.
The event offers a diverse range of activities that promote mental and physical well-being, spiritual growth, and a sense of inclusivity and empowerment. Through activities such as friendly sports competitions, talent shows, music performances, art and poetry exhibits, and delectable food options, participants can engage in a safe and inclusive environment.
As stated by the late Carol Hope, the founder, and spokesperson for the Friendship Network, “The Friendship Games symbolizes unity, compassion, and support for individuals with long-term psychiatric conditions.” The event brings together individuals from all walks of life to support those facing mental health challenges.
The Friendship Games – Hope Lives On! aims to break down stigmas, promote understanding, and provide an unforgettable experience for all participants. The Friendship Network believes in the power of the community and the positive impact it can have on individuals with mental illness.
The Friendship Games- Hope Lives On! was made possible through the tireless efforts of the Friendship Network, along with the generous support of sponsors and volunteers.
