Derek Moore, Thriving Mind’s Peer Services Manag

Derek Moore, Thriving Mind’s Peer Services Manager, spoke this week at a Crisis Intervention Training (CIT), where he shared his recovery story and talked about the functions of our organization’s Peer Department. CIT emphasizes a partnership between law enforcement, the mental health and substance use disorder treatment system, mental health advocacy groups, and individuals of mental health services and their families.

Derek was joined by Esther Serrano, Thriving Mind’s Peer Services Specialist, and Habsi W. Kaba with the Eleventh Judicial Circuit Criminal Mental Health Project.

The 2025 Friendship Games, held on Valentine's Day

The 2025 Friendship Games, held on Valentine's Day, February 14th, marked its 40th year with a wonderful celebration of food, fellowship, and fun at TY Park in Hollywood, Florida. This memorable event saw participation from more than 12 agencies and attendance from more than 500 people. The day was truly a celebration of the strength and unity within the community, bringing together people to share in the joys of friendship and camaraderie.

The Games are organized by Thriving Mind provider Fresh Start of Miami-Dade.

Among the highlights were the Hero of Hope awards, which were bestowed upon several distinguished individuals for their exceptional contributions to our community.

The recipients included Lourdes Dorado-Rubio, Department of Children and Families Regional Director, and Dr. John Newcomer, CEO of Thriving Mind of South Florida, whose award was accepted on his behalf by Adilen Cruz, Thriving Mind’s VP of Behavioral Health. Additional honorees were Steve Zuckerman, Thriving Mind CFO; Manuel Fernandez, CQI Specialist; and Eric Robinson, Peer Specialist with the VOCA Program at Thriving Mind. Roberto Alvear, Recovery Oriented Quality Improvement Specialist from the Department of Children and Families, also received an award.

Join NAMI Miami-Dade for Peer-to-Peer: A Free Educational Program for Adults Living with Mental Health Conditions!

NAMI Peer-to-Peer is an eight-session course designed to help individuals better understand their mental health, their recovery, and themselves. Led by trained facilitators with lived experience, this program offers a safe, supportive space where you can learn, grow, and connect with others who share similar experiences.

Throughout the course, you'll gain confidence, set goals for the future, partner with healthcare providers, and learn valuable tools for relaxation and stress reduction. You'll also strengthen your relationships, improve communication, and discover more about available mental health treatment options.

The program will take place from February 18th to April 8th, every Tuesday night from 6 pm to 8 pm via Zoom. Be sure to RSVP by February 8th and register today at Bit.ly/NAMIMiamiP2P.

On Friday, Thriving Mind’s Jessica Rodriguez, Vice President of Contracts; Nivia Dexter, Contract Manager, and Derek Moore, Peer Services Manager, were invited to visit network service provider Miami Recovery Project by CEO John Gill. During the visit, they discussed how Thriving Mind contracts and how peer departments could continue to support the organization. Additionally, they explored Recovery Community Organization (RCO) development in our region, ways to expand RCO services to the community, and resource-sharing opportunities with other providers in our network.

The event, held Saturday, was attended by South Florida Wellness staff, Circle of Brotherhood, as well as college students, community neighbors. Together, they conducted neighborhood outreach and distributed hygiene packs.
