A few weeks ago, Community Health of South Florida, Inc. (CHI) proudly hosted its first-ever Mental Health Awareness Health Fair to showcase the wide range of behavioral health and supportive services offered across the organization. The event provided patients with educational resources, wellness information, and opportunities to learn more about the programs available to support mental health, substance use recovery, and overall well-being. Recently, Thriving Mind's Prevention Department hosted a collaborative hybrid large group meeting bringing together BSRI, the Peer Department, Prevention Providers, and administrative support teams to discuss ongoing initiatives related to ROSC, prevention services, and system-wide collaboration. The meeting created space for meaningful dialogue, shared updates, and strategic planning as teams continue strengthening prevention efforts across the community. There is a lot of exciting momentum building with new ideas, partnerships, and opportunities taking shape in preparation for the future of prevention services and support. A special shout out to our amazing Prevention Coordinator, Nisermy Ferro, for all of her incredible work spearheading these efforts!

Florida Department of Children and Families Announces $2.3 Million Award to Top 10 Performing Opioid Incentive Programs (Including Miami-Dade County)
Today, Florida Department of Children and Families (Department) Secretary Taylor N. Hatch announced awards to the state’s 10 top performing Coordinated Opioid Recovery (CORE) Incentive Program participants for their exceptional efforts in combating opioid addiction, expanding access to care, and advancing innovative approaches to addressing substance use disorders. “Thanks to Governor DeSantis’ steadfast commitment to strengthening Florida’s behavioral health system, our state is delivering real results for individuals and families,” said Taylor Hatch. “The CORE Network reflects what is possible when prevention, treatment, recovery, and accountability are aligned and driven by those they are intended to serve.”

Since its launch in 2022, the CORE Network has served as a countywide, coordinated system that unites emergency medical services, hospitals, long-term treatment providers, and law enforcement to deliver a comprehensive and aligned response, as well as strengthen existing services for individuals with substance use disorders. In FY 2024-2025, the CORE Network produced measurable results, with more than 22,950 individuals with opioid use disorder receiving medication-assisted treatment (MAT), representing a 70 percent engagement rate, well above the national benchmark of 18 percent. MAT was also initiated across multiple access points, including more than 7,480 through CORE Network treatment providers and more than 15,470 through emergency medical services, emergency departments, and other care pathways. In FY 2025-2026, the CORE Network expanded statewide to all 67 counties, allowing for continued growth in its services. A recent earlier addition of law enforcement to the CORE Network is creating new early intervention opportunities for individuals who may not seek help on their own. @myflfamilies

Derek Moore and Isabella “Izzy” Lopez from the Thriving Mind Peer Department attended the 2026 Floridians for Recovery Leadership Summit, an event dedicated to strengthening Florida’s growing recovery movement. The summit brought together advocates, certified peer specialists, organizational leaders, and community partners who share a commitment to promoting hope, healing, and long‑term recovery across the state.

Throughout the event, participants engaged in collaborative discussions, leadership development sessions, and networking opportunities designed to enhance the impact of peer support services. Derek and Izzy’s participation contributed to building meaningful connections and expanding Thriving Mind’s presence within the statewide recovery community. Their involvement supports ongoing efforts to improve recovery-oriented systems of care and to ensure that peer voices remain central in shaping future initiatives and funding priorities.

Thriving Mind is proud to share new research led by Dr. Steve Proctor, published in Community Mental Health Journal, examining the real-world impact of Mobile Response Teams (MRTs) in Miami-Dade County, operated by our partners at The Village South/WestCare.

The findings—from nearly 2,000 children and adults across a 12-month period—demonstrate that community-based mobile crisis response teams divert the majority of behavioral health emergencies away from psychiatric hospitalization, while still meeting state standards for timely, in-person care. Specifically, nearly two-thirds of behavioral health crises were diverted from hospitalization, and 95% of responses were delivered in-person with an average response time under 60 minutes. The implications extend well beyond South Florida, with relevance for crisis systems across the state of Florida as well as nationally.

The Passageway Mental Health Expo on May 9, 2026 brought together providers, stakeholders, and community members for a day centered on connection, collaboration, and community well‑being. Representing Thriving Mind, Derek Moore and Isabella “Izzy” Lopez participated alongside Passageway, and many of our valued provider partners.
The expo featured a vibrant mix of mental health resources, engaging conversations, and opportunities to strengthen relationships across the network. Attendees enjoyed great food, meaningful fellowship, and a shared commitment to supporting one another in the work of improving community mental health.
The event served as a powerful reminder of the impact that collective effort can have. It reinforced the importance of continued collaboration as we work together toward a healthier, more connected community.
