The study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, found that participants who walked for 90 minutes in a natural area showed decreased activity in the region of the brain associated with depression when compared to people who walked in a high-traffic urban setting.

On Friday, January 16, the Board of Directors of Thriving Mind South Florida, Inc. appointed Laura M. Naredo as the organization’s President and Chief Executive Officer.

Ms. Naredo brings more than 21 years of service to Thriving Mind South Florida, having held a variety of leadership roles throughout her tenure. Most recently, she served as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, where she provided strategic and operational leadership, overseeing program planning and ensuring coordination and efficiency across administrative, programmatic, and operational functions to support effective service delivery.

In addition to her work at Thriving Mind, Ms. Naredo has extensive experience collaborating with state agencies and nonprofit organizations in the behavioral health care system. She looks forward to working closely with providers, community partners, and stakeholders in her new role to continue advancing the organization’s mission.

Fresh Start of Miami-Dade, one of our valued provider partners, sponsored a Spanish-language Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP 1) training designed to strengthen participants’ ability to navigate mental health challenges with confidence and resilience. The session centered on practical coping strategies, self‑management tools, and proactive approaches for handling mental health crisis situations.

The training was facilitated by Cesar Lemoine from the Department of Children and Families (DCF) and Onoret Sanchez from Banyan Health Systems, both of whom brought extensive experience and cultural insight to the discussion. Their guidance helped attendees build personalized wellness plans, deepen their understanding of recovery principles, and develop skills to support their own well‑being as well as that of their communities.
This collaborative effort reflects our ongoing commitment to expanding accessible, culturally responsive mental health resources throughout Miami‑Dade County.
