A report released Wednesday, August 13th, states Two Miami-Dade ZIP Codes Experienced Historic Drops in Homicide. That report cites three community partnerships, including Thriving Mind, that resulted in more safety in the region.

ROSC Talk: The Power of Language – Refreshing Our Recovery Conversations
This session, led by Derek Moore and Esther Serrano in collaboration with Jackson Behavioral Health, explores how the words we choose can either reinforce stigma or open the door to healing. Grounded in Recovery-Oriented Systems of Care (ROSC) principles, the talk highlighted the transformative impact of language in shaping how individuals experience support, dignity, and hope throughout their recovery journey.
Moore and Serrano guided participants through the subtle but powerful shifts that occur when providers adopt recovery‑oriented language—phrasing that emphasizes personhood over diagnosis, strengths over deficits, and collaboration over control. They illustrate how everyday conversations can either unintentionally perpetuate shame or actively empower individuals to reclaim their narratives.
The discussion also examines practical strategies for refreshing communication habits within behavioral health settings. Participants learn how to replace outdated or stigmatizing terminology with language that promotes autonomy, resilience, and partnership. Through examples and interactive reflection, the presenters demonstrated how intentional communication can strengthen trust, enhance engagement, and support long‑term recovery outcomes.
Ultimately, the talk underscores a central message: when we change our language, we change our culture. By embracing recovery‑oriented communication, providers help create environments where people feel seen, respected, and capable of growth—an essential foundation for healing.

Derek Moore, Thriving Mind’s Peer Services Manager

Derek Moore, Thriving Mind’s Peer Services Manager, spoke today at a Crisis Intervention Training (CIT), where he shared his recovery story and discussed the functions of our organization’s Peer Department. CIT, which is comprised of law enforcement and other first responders, emphasizes a partnership between these professionals, the mental health and substance use disorder treatment system, mental health advocacy groups, and individuals receiving mental health services and their families.

Studies have found that taking a walk through nature produces measurable benefits for your mental health and may even reduce the risk of depression. The study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, found that participants who walked for 90 minutes in a natural area showed decreased activity in the region of the brain associated with depression when compared to people who walked in a high-traffic urban setting.
